Here are some of my favourite 404 pages.* Send me some cool ones to be featured here (with credits!)
Lovefilm's clever 404 pages are not only a nod to film, but also alternate when you refresh. Would be nice to see a HAL reference in there too... "I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that." Unearthed by my boyfriend Jamie Pett.
http://nh7.in/404 - I came across this site when adding some links for Zervas and Pepper, who I did a site for, because they are playing the NH7 weekender in Delhi in November 2013. This is a pleasingly verbose and colourful 404 page.
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/404 - My mum, Valerie Garland, found this one for me on the World of Warcraft site. I like the nod to the game in the error text.
https://github.com/emma404 - Angry unicorn on GitHub is the best!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/404/404 - A hidden gem in the BBC Programmes 404. It uses the classic BBC Test Card, but wait... Mr Blobby has invaded! The page seems to have since been taken down (almost as soon as I added it here)...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/404 - Another nice BBC 404. Be warned that a guy shouts out the word you're hovering over...
http://www.zervasandpepper.com/404 - One of mine. The band seemed to like it, it just needs a funny image
http://lesscss.org/404 - I love LESS for making CSS just easier and cooler. The 404 page sums them up really.
https://github.com/404 - cute Star Wars reference, now animated slightly in HTML5
chi.mp (no longer linkable) - now a Star Trek reference
http://mailchimp.com/404 - a longstring of sausages is always funny!
http://www.3sixty.co.uk/page-not-found.aspx - no longer linkable. Wilted daisy, queue comedy failed trumpet noise
http://www.thinkgeek.com/404/ - I just like the word "Erroids"
http://www.bluegg.co.uk/404 - Saw these guys at the awesome Port 80 web conference in Newport. They were cool, and so is their 404 page (Tom even did a yoda impression after audience pressure!)
http://www.bluegg.co.uk/404 - Bluegg have updated their 404 page to a screaming sheep, in full colour motion picture
http://css-tricks.com/thispagedoesnotexist - the page title reads "You've ripped a hole in the fabric of the internet. Love, CSS-tricks."
http://www.google.com/404 - you've gotta love a broken robot!
* If you're wondering what a 404 page is, it is a "Page not Found" response. If you want to try and find some 404 pages, try typing a random word in after a URL.
